Going into this election, Shrader’s excitement was more measured than her daughter’s; she’d already gotten a temperature read on how America felt about a woman president in 2016, in the form of former Secretary of StateNow, in the wake of Harris’ loss, Shrader said she feels like “there’s no glass ceiling; it’s more like a concrete block.”
Given her daughter’s age, she didn’t need to delve too deeply into the election results, but a Harris win would have been a huge representation win for the family. “If my 9-year-old sees me sad or frustrated, I’d explain, ’I feel this way because I care so much about the future and about fairness for everyone,” Chappell Marsh added.“I've told them that they need to be respectful and understanding of the process and the will of the people.”“It’s important to remind them that fighting for what’s right is always the best approach even if others do not stand with you,” she said.
