With so many physical changes and hormones coursing through the system, adjusting to life with a newborn baby can prove to be quite challenging for first-time moms. Here, leading experts give advice on how new moms (like the Duchess of Sussex) can power through their 'fourth trimester'.
"Plan to take a tiny bit of time — even if it is 10 or 20 minutes a day — to do something on your own," suggests Dr. Oster. Read a book, surf the internet, pamper your skin, meditate or watch TV."It can be easy to lose the sense of yourself in a world where you are attached to a baby. Sometimes, women need to remind themselves that they have a life outside of motherhood," explains the bestselling author.
"It's quite common for women to have scary, intrusive thoughts," says Burd."But they are often afraid to mention postpartum sadness or scary thoughts to anyone, fearing that others might confuse it with rare postpartum psychosis that is associated with infanticide," explains the mental health therapist. Bottom line: Don't bottle up your feelings and suffer in silence. Talk to your partner, parents or friends, whoever you feel comfortable with.
But if the feeling of overwhelming sadness or anxiety persists,"don't wait until you can't stand it", says Burd."It doesn't matter if you don't meet the diagnostic criteria for a full-blown depressive episode. If you're going through a transition , you would benefit from having a safe and confidential place to work through your feelings", she explains.
"A good perinatal psychotherapist will also help you come up with practical strategies for building your support network, managing interpersonal conflict, and navigating role transitions," adds Burd. It's also important to know that"emotional postpartum challenges can crop up even months after the baby is born. They don't always happen right away," Oster points out. In fact,"depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and other mood symptoms are a lot more common after and even during pregnancy, among both women and men who are parenting a new baby," says Dr. Conti.
