The organisation Legs4Africa rescues limbs from landfill, and sends them over 6,000 miles to help 1.7million African amputees unable to access them.
While once able to offer an amputee the chance to live a more independent life, after an owner has outgrown their limb – or it’s no longer needed – they’re classed as medical waste and most are discarded, with no further purpose.of these pre-loved prosthetics, a Bristol-based charity now collects over 50% of the UK’s discarded legs and helps people in sub-Saharan Africa get back on their feet.
As the charity celebrates its 10,000th recycled leg milestone, three people tell Metro.co.uk what led them to Legs4Africa, and why donating or receiving their prosthetic has meant so much to them.In October 2019, I lost my leg in a grizzly road accident. I was 23.I think I knew that I would lose my leg, even while I was still trapped in the wreckage of the crash, as it was completely smashed at the knee.
Before this, I was a very independent person. I used to pay my school fees and support my family from the money I got from doing menial jobs.I had to drop out of school, which took a huge toll on me psychologically Almost a year later of feeling frustrated and being stuck, at home with my parents, I came across Legs4Africa on Facebook and I reached out to them. This message changed my life.
Finally, I have regained my confidence and developed a positive outlook towards my disability. I am no longer depressed, and I have been able to socially reintegrate. We were so focused on just getting rid of the cancer that, for the first four months, we didn’t even think about surgery. In the following March, we had a meeting that was to change all our lives forever.
we continued to go for regular scans to see if the cancer had come back, and every time it just got more terrifying. Charlie still had all of his prosthetic legs at this point. I remember my husband saying that there must be someone who could make use of them, then he did some research and through social media discovered Legs4Africa.
My grandfather, George, was a fairly quiet man but he always found time to talk to you and took interest in anything you did – you could say he was your typical grandad. So, you can imagine my shock when I found it while clearing my mother’s house, after she died in March 2020. My grandparents had moved into that house back in 1940, when my mother was only 12. My sister, and I were brought up there too. We were a multi-generational household for a long time!
