After leaving hospital she moved to London where she began to cross-dress. She moved to Paris in the late 1950 and joined the cast of a drag cabaret at the famous Le Carrousel Theatre.
She was only the second Briton to undergo male-to-female transition surgery and suffered severe side effects including dizziness and swelling for two years after the operation.Following the operation, however, April was able to obtain a National Insurance card, passport and driving licence which described her as female.
By this time she had already met the Hon Arthur Corbett – the Eton-educated son and heir of Lord Rowallan. They married in 1963 but the marriage fell apart.
