“Certainly coming out of the pandemic we saw a spike in competitive offers from other tech firms across Canada going after our people,” Alida chief executive Ross Wainwright said. “To combat that, we need to make sure we provide a fair and rewarding compensation plan and a really aggressive and innovative benefits package.”

“I have a responsibility to help my employees achieve a better work-life balance and help address the mental health challenges that are a product of the pandemic,” Wainwright said. “The four-day workweek is a big part of that commitment.” The pandemic played a major role in transforming the way some people view work culture, but Ilona Dougherty, managing director of the Youth and Innovation Project at Waterloo University, believes that the shift in workplace mentality, led by gen Z, has more to do with neuroscience and“What we know about gen Z is that their brains are wired in a certain way, to be bold problem solvers and challenge the status quo,” Dougherty said.
