Rogers plans to take over the TTC’s wireless network, and build a 5G network throughout the entire subway system.
Rogers customers should be able to talk and text while riding portions of Toronto’s subway system by early next year, with riders using other cellphone providers likely to follow shortly after.
Under requirements laid out by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, customers can connect to the towers of carriers other than their own. “It’s likely that the existence of the mandates will incentivize everyone to play nice because it will act as a backstop.” A spokesperson for Telus said “we are committed to working with the TTC and other carriers to deliver a solution that ensures access for all riders.” Bell did not respond to questions from the Star.
