And Why He Matters

suggests the average working mom works about 98 hours per week between her professional and home duties, making moms tremendous contributors of paid and unpaid labor.66% of American households

with children, both parents are working. The “typical” American family no longer has one breadwinner and one parent managing the home. As a result, household tasks should — in theory — be split between working parents. But even though there are roughly equal numbers of working moms and working dads, men are still doing less work at home than their female partners. According to a 2018 Fairygodboss survey on, 61% of men agree that they share an equal responsibility to co-manage household duties with their partner. However, 40% of women reported doing over eight hours of chores a week, compared to only 29% of men reporting the same. Instead, men more often reported doing two to four hours of chores per week.

Although working dads say they believe they should help out at home, women continue to take on the bulk of household chores — and they report feeling like this unpaid labor often affects their performance at work. Men, meanwhile, report feeling like they’re unable to leave work to take care of household responsibilities because they’re told it’s “women’s work” or because their supervisors and peers expect them to be the breadwinner.

The fact that fathers are less inclined to help out at home can be attributed, at least in part, to our society’s refusal to address the working dad as both a member of the workforce and a parent.
