Every painter who strives to capture the vast landscapes of the American West today lives in both the sunshine and shadows of the painters who came before them.Beau Carey’s abstract takes on the West include “The Shining World,” this oil painting he made in 2022.
Beau Carey is one of those abstract painters, and among the more successful working artists who carry on and expand the genre. “The Shining World,” his current show at Visions West Contemporary gallery in Denver, is full of well-thought-out and intensely felt updates of Western art, and they are far afield from anything that might have appeared in a gallery in the late 19th century when Remington ruled the day.Still, Carey is very much in dialogue with those early artists.
And so, in works like his “Slow Rise“ , we actually see four versions of the sun — from a small crescent to a full-on sphere — at one time. We also see the various ways it shines light and casts shadows on the craggy crests of blue mountains as it makes its way across the sky. In real time, this would happen over several hours, but Carey helps us to see it — and to remember the sensory aspects of watching a sunrise — in a single moment.
