Smoke, from indoor and outdoor wood burning stoves plus campfires, has been linked to serious health issues.Dark chocolate got me through the pandemic lockdown. Just a square a day after lunch proved a panacea for all the complications of that life. Now Consumer Reports has come out swinging against my favourite treat.
Like previous studies connecting smoking to cancer, I’m sure it’ll take a couple of decades for Canadians to lower their alcohol risk. While I used to blame the airborne chemicals sprayed regularly on the orchard near us, Suzuki’s team now have me believing that my youngest’s childhood asthma was probably linked to the gas stove in the kitchen.
But Dr. Nick Hopkinson, medical director at Asthma UK and British Lung Foundation, has said in The Guardian that both indoor and outdoor pollution caused by wood burning stoves caused serious health issues. They range, he stated, from breathing problems to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and lung cancer.
There are so many things that aren’t good for a person. Sitting at a desk for hours on end, for example, isn’t great for overall health. Links have been made to diabetes and heart disease. For women, additional risks have been identified. It is wise to be informed about new concerns, like chocolate and alcohol. We ought to take a serious look at cooking and heating sources, especially those around children.
