Susan Surette-Draper signed multiple copies of Refuge at the book launch in late October. WENDY ELLIOTTfollowed her own advice writing a fictional account called Refuge about her Acadian ancestors. I remember her saying, people should tell their own stories.

The longtime president of Les Amis de Grand-Pré first compiled a booklet in 2004 called Return to Acadie: A Self-Guided Memory Walk of the Annapolis Valley. She was beginning to understand the kind of resilience and survival instincts that Pierre and Catherine demonstrated in turbulent times. Eventually, the family seized an opportunity to rent land in Yarmouth County deeded to Planter settlers. The relatively equal finances of both groups led to the wide assimilation of the Francophones.

With the help of a genealogist, Susan discovered there were even smaller communities that Suret was connected to, all on the same river. She stopped at a coffee shop and asked some locals if any Surettes still lived in the area. “They’d never heard that name. I was happy to be so close,” she says.
