Eric Chevrier is something of a rarity in Canadian sport.

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport made the announcement earlier this month, though the decision was rendered last Nov. 24. According to a CCES spokesperson, only a “small number” of people have received lifetime bans and reinstatement is rare. How rare is hard to determine, as the spokesperson said privacy restrictions dictate that files over 10 years old be deleted unless the sanction is active.

Former swimming coach Cecil Russell received a lifetime ban in 1997 for running a steroid distribution ring, was reinstated in 2005, but had that overturned two years later when an Ontario judge ruled Russell fraudulently argued for reinstatement. “It was just a question of time,” he said. “It should have happened in 2006, because eight years was already past. But you know we have to go through their procedures and also, how do I say that in English, they didn’t laugh at me, but they did on purpose extend time, take time to answer. Blah. Blah. Blah. Try later. All these things to make the procedure longer so I would get discouraged and stop. I didn’t stop.

The former Canadian weightlifting champ at 85kg has built a good business, he said, training people at a Montreal gym, in his home, and in the homes of his clients. He said he has trained perhaps 2,500 professional and amateur athletes along the way, including world champions. Many of his clients would not acknowledge their arrangement with him publicly, such was the risk of scandal.

“I know it’s part of the game. I know it’s not personal. It’s like anything else, you learn to live with it. You learn to laugh about it. Some people will never understand and some people will go past that and understand. That’s why I kept having a lot of clients.” “I was 16 years old back then,” Dufault said. “I never used any prohibited substance. But I think everybody needs a second chance, you know. I think people make choices and sometimes you have to live with it and I think he did.”
