The Canes and Coyotes are putting together two of the best underdog stories of the season. Dixononsports has more in his Weekend Takeaways.
• Tough start to the great Blue Jackets all-in experiment of 2019. Columbus was waxed at home twice on the weekend, first getting blanked 4-0 by Edmonton on Saturday, then taking a 5-2 ‘L’ against Winnipeg on Sunday. The Jackets have played four domestic tilts since pushing in their chips on trade deadline day and the team’s only win was an overtime nail-bitter over the Flyers. Overall, the Jackets have been outscored 17-8 in those contests.
• At the other end of the trade spectrum, Winnipeg got a nice 1-2-3 showing from Kevin Hayes during his second game as a Jet on Friday. The fact it happened in a win over Nashville — the team they’re slugging it out with for the division lead — makes it all the better. Of course, Hayes’ work in that game pales in comparison to the four-goal outing captain Blake Wheeler posted in the victory over Columbus.
• Is anybody having a stealthier strong season than the Boston Bruins? The B’s blanked New Jersey 1-0 on Saturday and haven’t endured a regulation-time loss since Jan. 19, going 12-0-4 in that time to give themselves the upper hand in the home-ice advantage battle they’re waging with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Boston had a similar surge at this same point last season, going 20-5-1 from games 41 through 66.
• It took Sidney Crosby 8:51 to register three of his four points in a crucial 5-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. ‘The Kid’ has six goals and 16 helpers for 22 points in his past 11 outings. I guess he’s not interested in a little spring break this year. • Lots of richly deserved love for Jarome Iginla this weekend in Calgary. I have to say, though, I’ve flipped over to the "Don’t actually retire the number" side of this wider conversation. Fete the man; hang a banner; shed a tear. This is about ceremony and giving fans a chance to say thanks, not actually taking a number out of circulation. If some frisky kid comes along and wants to bleed for the Flames while wearing No. 12, what a fantastic bit of symmetry.
