Are reusable paper towels... usable?

I’ve always hated the phrase “jumping the shark,” primarily for its regular misuse. People often mix it up with “jumping the gun,” which has a different meaning entirely. None of this would be an issue if more people respected the origin of idioms, , or both. But I digress. And I apologize. Because I’m about to go there: to sharks, to jumping them. And to paper towels.This month, I was tasked with trying out a package of reusable paper towels—a product that’s baffling on principle. For more than a century, paper towels have functioned as a conveniently disposable version of something you’d otherwise use, reuse, and eventually wash. They were a convenient alternative to the humble, reusable kitchen towel.
There are—somehow—about a half-dozen brands of reusable paper towels out there. I tried a manufactured by a German brand passive-aggressively called, packaged with biodegradable “plastic” which my 4-year-old loudly proclaimed “smells like band-aids.” Each paper towel is meant to last a full week, after which it can be composted . I chose not to keep mine around that long. Here’s why.Unless you’re comparing them to cardboard.

It was quickly relegated to oven grease clean up, from which it didn’t recover.that happily hangs out on an oven handle or towel bar, reusable paper towels remained stiff even after a few uses, requiring that they be laid flat to dry before reuse.
