With a bigger platform during NCAA basketball tournament, Brandon Weatherspoon is pushing relief help for Rolling Fork community

Florida Atlantic guard Brandon Weatherspoon, celebrating a win over Tennessee in the Sweet 16, has been leading an effort to help people in his home state of Mississippi after a recent tornado. When Brandon Weatherspoon heard about tornadoes devastating his home state of Mississippi last week, the Florida Atlantic guard flashed back to when he was a child trying to keep safe with his family during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.

As Weatherspoon and his FAU teammates prepared to face Kansas State in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last week in New York’s Madison Square Garden, he was keeping a wary eye on the weather in his home state. “People lost their lives, people lost their belongings, their houses, people are out on the street,” an emphatic Weatherspoon said at the time. “I’ve been homeless before, so I know how it feels. If anybody can reach out and give them their hand … just support them at this time. They need it.”

Weatherspoon is the younger brother of former Mississippi State standout and former San Antonio Spur Quinndary Weatherspoon, and their brother Nick also played basketball for Mississippi State.
