Summerside resident Frances Doyle, 89, sends 40 pairs of mittens overseas
For the first time in around 50 years, Summerside resident Frances Doyle sat down to knit a pair of mittens. She did not knit with any goal in mind, but by the time she had 40 pairs complete, she decided to send them overseas to give to Ukrainians impacted by the war. – Kristin GardinerSUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — For the first time in nearly 50 years Frances Doyle picked up a ball of yarn and a pair of needles and started to knit.
“I just started doing it for a pastime,” she said. “Something to fill in the hours when I wasn’t playing cards or doing something.”By the end of November, the Summerside woman had stockpiled 40 pairs. “These mothers that are wandering about, carrying a child in their arms, and another one by the hand, it looked so sad,” said Doyle. “I have seen them wear heavy coats, so I know it’s a cold climate there. I was happy to be able to send them.”Angels of Prince Edward IslandThe group, said Christine Zareck with Angels of P.E.I., aims to send money and donations to Ukraine to help citizens during the war.
Since getting back into the hobby of knitting, Frances Doyle has donated much of her work to various causes. – Kristin Gardiner“It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing,” said Doyle.“It was very rewarding to think that someone so far away will be wearing my mittens." Doyle has already begun making even more mittens – knitting a teal pair at her dining table as she spoke to SaltWire Network in early December.
