Wallpaper is back! Here’s how to make it look modern in 2023, with expert decor tips and shopping recommendations.
About 10 years ago, interior designer Joanne Dolan remembers having a conversation with a painter about wallpaper, which was then a design trend firmly out of favour.
“In the design world, we’ve been seeing wallpaper for quite some time, but I’m excited that it’s getting so much easier to convince my clients to do it,” says Dolan. In fact, she says, wallpaper has moved beyond “trend” status, and is now ubiquitous enough that it’s just another element in a design tool box, rather than a statement of the moment. “It’s here to stay.”
This rather glorious maximalism takes full form in a recent collaboration between Toronto-based wallpaper purveyors Fine & Dandy Co. and artist Loraine Mohar. Some of the standout pieces of the collection are the “mural papers,” which eschew a repeating pattern for a single scene designed to be used on its own — not unlike something an artist might have painted on the walls of a 16th-century Tuscan villa.
