“We will make one more good faith attempt to negotiate and to get access to the [Mueller] report, and if we don’t get that, we will proceed to hold the attorney general in contempt,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler threatened.
What was supposed to be a House Judiciary Committee hearing with Attorney General William Barr Thursday morning instead featured Democrats eating Kentucky Fried Chicken and threatening to hold the nation’s top law enforcement official in contempt, while Republicans accused their counterparts of playing political games.
The deadline to adhere to the chairman’s subpoena expired Wednesday as Democrats' calls for Barr's resignation—for allegedly lying to Congress—mounted. But Democrats warned that, while contempt proceedings play out in Congress, they have other remedies to try to compel the attorney general’s compliance.
Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec called the format “inappropriate,” while the committee’s top Republican, Representative Doug Collins, labeled it “ludicrous demands” and “another line of circus stunts.” Contrary to Mueller’s misgivings, Barr told lawmakers weeks later that he did “not know whether Bob Mueller supported my conclusions.”
