Opinion: Every day, Americans across the country find themselves in a situation such as one we faced together as patient and doctor — the one pregnant and needing an abortion after careful advice, and the other able to provide both.
, Stephanie's vitals were plummeting. A dangerous uterine infection had developed. Our grief and our heartbreak deepened, yet at that point — with the support of friends, family and other doctors — we understood that a life-saving abortion procedure was necessary for survival.
We spent many hours together during those long days in the hospital. Acts of love and compassion, both small and large, were constant — from round-the-clock bedside care, to the support of social workers and healers, to simple prayer flags hung in the room for comfort. We understood that recovery is about more than medical expertise, but also about the compassion we show people in their times of need.
As part of this case, the Supreme Court will also determine whether doctors who provide abortion care should be allowed to be able to. There is no question that doctors should be able to advocate for their patients in court. Abortion is a difficult and heartbreaking decision for some. At the same time, it is a necessary and potentially life-saving option for people whose futures could depend on their doctors’ ability to care for and advocate for them.
