Although major cities have seen a 30% uptick in visits to the office, IWG CEO Mark Dixon sees a booming business in the suburbs.

Google is building cool, outdoor hangouts. The company’s Silicon Valley headquarters converted a parking lot and lawn area into “Camp Charleston,” which offers greenery and wooden-deck flooring. There will be tables and chairs sprinkled around, as well as open-air tents. Meetings could be held in large “teepees” that boast high-end video conferencing technology.

Like many people who live in the suburbs, there’s no burning desire to get back on a bus or train and waste two to three hours going back and forth in a dreadful, soul-sucking commute to the city every day. People don’t want to be stuck at home every day either—fixing spotty internet connections without any IT help, ensuring the lighting is right for yet another Zoom call and going outside to make a phone call because you can't get a good reception in the house for some reason.

Going to a Regus location a couple of times a week is one alternative to getting out of the house and breaking up the monotony. IWG, which owns the Regus brand and other co-working divisions, has around 3,500 buildings in more than 120 countries and counts 83% of the Fortune 500 firms among its global customer base. Its spaces offer a community atmosphere.

Having fewer commuters helps the environment by cutting down carbon emissions, Dixon pointed out. Co-working spaces are convenient. They allow corporations to lose the large and expensive real estate burden. IWG would house their staff when they want to get out of their apartments and homes, even if it's for one day a week.
