"The cultural committee has been learning a lot about getting funding. It's hard to ask for money when we aren't charging people to attend our cultural events," Gould said."But we've come across grant opportunities that we weren't too aware of. Now it seems like we're going down the hill and picking up speed."
Copage, 50, said she's been travelling to powwows since she was 16, making her a great choice for the position. She said she's excited to MC but is most excited about reconnecting with her"powwow family." The event's schedule includes cultural displays, vendors and interactive workshops for visitors. Gould said activities range from traditional dancing to community healing sessions, archery demonstrations and even a karaoke night.
"There will be other healing ceremonies over the four days of the sacred fire. It's more than a powwow; it's a healing weekend," Gould said."We've trained a few of our community members how to facilitate Mi'kmaw baby welcoming ceremonies, so some facilitators are performing a ceremony on Friday.
