If Generation Z were defined by one word, it would perhaps be “hustle”: nonstop work to achieve an ambitious goal. Many of today’s high schoolers feel pressure to simultaneously maintain a 4.0 GPA, score perfectly on standardized tests, engage in cutting edge research, and play a varsity sport in order to achieve “success” in a society that rewards busyness above all else.
As a result, we’ve let organizing expand to fill our entire lives. We’re on Zoom calls for hours each day. Weekends are spent in back-to-back meetings. Breaks in school turn into chances to check Slack or respond to emails, and study hall disappears, consumed by social media posts. Of course, we're privileged to have the access and time to do this work, but it doesn't make it any less draining.when we’re using it to quiet our climate anxiety.
It was only recently that we realized that we have allowed the systems that we’re fighting against to take over our lives. We recognize capitalism as aof the climate crisis. Yet as we work towards climate solutions, paradoxically, we fall prey to the constant need to “be productive.” We internalize that the more work we do, the more change we are making.
The truth is, young people won’t stop organizing. We’ve been left with no choice. Now, our best shot at survival is toall over the world that can support each other in times of crisis and advocate together for a society that works for everyone. As organizers, we must model that strength and resiliency in our own lives, combating hustle culture by caring for ourselves, each other, and the people that we don’t know, and never giving up on the future we deserve.
