The town of Sundre says an Alberta-wide shortage of combined laboratory and x-ray technologists is jeopardizing the future of their emergency care department. The town's council is rallying other municipalities to demand action from the provincial government. Sundre's call-to-action will be up for debate this week at the Alberta Municipalities Conference.
The town of Sundre has put forward a resolution for this week's Alberta Municipalities Conference calling for expanded laboratory and x-ray technologist training programs.
"We want our ER open 24 hours-a-day, and Sundre is really reaching out for help to make this happen," said Warnock. "We do have facilities that can actually undertake x-rays in small towns and villages throughout the province," he said. Most laboratory and x-ray technologists work in rural areas where budget constraints often prevent medical clinics from hiring separate lab and x-ray workers.
Municipal officials will vote on more than 20 resolutions brought forward by communities around the province, including a proposal to let local governments decide whether to allow golf carts on their roads.
