A group of women who settled with owner Ken Friedman after years of abuse and harassment are now vying to open their own restaurant where the Spotted Pig once stood

, “I’m open to doing whatever it takes to have the Spotted Pig live on. If taking my damaged reputation out of the equation gets foodies to come, I would do that.” But according to head chef, absent patrons weren’t the problem. “The sales were good, we were real busy, lots of tourists came,” he said. “Everyone loved working there—nobody called in sick or came in late.

Right after the story came out, the restaurant’s general manager told staff that closing was a possibility, Nassif said. Last Friday, he continued, human resources told the kitchen that its last day of operation might be February 1. “But suppliers stopped delivering and there wasn’t enough food to last past Sunday,” Nassif said. On Jan 26, the restaurant’s final day, Nassif broke the news onwho worked at the Spotted Pig for many years, including as general manager, and who is one of the settlement recipients, was unsurprised by the turn of events. She never expected to receive money from the profit-sharing portion of the deal. “He agreed to the 20% profit-sharing so easily, which wasn’t like him,” she says of Friedman.

Two other former employees agreed to take part, and Nelson has since been reaching out to her contacts in the restaurant industry in a quest to find backers—and advice. “There’s been a very steep learning curve,” she said.
