Ocasio-Cortez has emerged as the loudest progressive critic of Congress' emergency relief bill, dismissing the $500 billion legislation as a Band-Aid for a gunshot wound
on the floor of Congress before the vote. A real solution can’t wait, she’s argued. “I understand the idea of an ‘interim’ patch bill, but if Congress doesn’t know when it will next convene, we need to vote on a bigger fix now,” sheon Twitter. “It is simply outrageous that Congress is considering voting on a small, patchwork bill after being out of session for a MONTH and recessing again without knowing when we will next convene. Thousands of people are DYING. PPP will quickly run out again.
Several outside progressive groups have adopted a similar posture to Ocasio-Cortez, with United We Dream, Popular Democracy, Indivisible, Demand Progress, and others, issuing statements opposing the legislation. The legislation, the groups assert, barely includes Democratic priorities—let alone progressive ones. But in Congress, even among progressives, Ocasio-Cortez has been lonely in voicing opposition to the interim funding bill. Some have expressed concern that the bill doesn’t do enough.
There is also a sense on Capitol Hill that the interim package might be the best Democrats can get at this moment, given the political reality of a Republican-controlled Senate andin the White House. “It is a sign of Pelosi’s leadership that she is able to have everyone coalesce and unite—with the exception of possibly a handful of individuals—and is able to secure every ideological viewpoint to get behind this vote.
Already the prospects of another massive relief package have dimmed. On Tuesday, right on the heels of passing the interim emergency relief bill in the Senate, McConnell threw cold water on a sweeping stimulus bill, that the days of passing legislation remotely by voice vote have come to an end and that the body will move forward “cautiously” from here out.
As for Republicans’ sudden concerns over the burgeoning national deficit, Ocasio-Cortez didn’t mince her words in a video conference with fellow progressive lawmakers on Monday. “If all these folks are worried about the deficit when a Democrat takes back the White House, let’s roll back that $2 trillion tax cut. I’m down. If you are worried about the deficit and you are worried about the national debt, let’s raise some taxes,” she said emphatically.
