Public Service Alliance of Canada members walk the picket line in front of federal buildings on Dorchester Street, Sydney, Wednesday. BARB SWEET/CAPE BRETON POST - Barb SweetSYDNEY, N.S. — As early morning fog gave way to afternoon sunshine, members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada walking the picket line in downtown Sydney Wednesday waved and smiled at passing motorists honking their horns.

The strike headquarters is at the Holiday Inn on the Esplanade so people with signs could be seen all over that end of the downtown. Sharon Clark, president of the Union of Tax Employees Local 80004 and vice-president Allana Capstick both started work a week after the last major PSAC strike in 2004.“We were there for everybody when the pandemic hit. We made sure everybody had their refunds, that the money got out,” Clark said.

“Like the grocery stores are jacking up the prices of food and getting record raises and profits. ... We're working class,” Capstick said. “So yeah, we're not living the high life.” She noted the federal workers’ dedication during the pandemic, especially those who deal face-to-face with the public. “I mean, I have two teenage boys and, you know, I go to the grocery store on payday and what used to cost me $200 now costs me almost $400. There’s no such thing as a cheap supper. Now, a taco kit, you know, even a taco kit has increased by $2 a box like that. You know, your wage can't stay at this level and have that level of increase,” Gallivan said.
