Five people have died of COVID\u002D19 during the past week in Ottawa amid growing outbreaks, according to Ottawa Public Health data.

“I would say that we are in a wave in Ottawa,” said Tyson Graber, associate scientist with the CHEO Research Institute and co-lead investigator with Ottawa’s coronavirus wastewater monitoring program. “It is significant, and it is causing significant morbidity and mortality.”On Wednesday, Ottawa Public Health reported five additional deaths and 10 new outbreaks caused by COVID-19 over the past seven days, with 177 new COVID-19 cases overall.

Dr. Gerald Evans, chair of the division of infectious diseases at Queen’s University, said “wave” was used specifically to refer to periods of a sustained rise followed by a drop in case counts, something seen with the Omicron sub-variant, for example.
