Board President Brandon Ewing articulated a policy he wants to be enacted, stating adults in the schools will not touch students in the wake of a substitute teacher getting into a physical altercation with a student earlier in the day.

Natasha Cade speaks to the Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 Board of Education with her son, Brandon Cole, at her side.

Emotions were on display from Ewing, Hanna, Cade and members of the public during the board meeting at the Lincoln Center administrative building in Waukegan in the aftermath of the arrest of the teacher, who allegedly beat Cole as an argument escalated.“It’s more than emotional, Miss Hanna,” Ewing said. “Either we’re going to have a zero-tolerance policy or we’re not. Either it’s OK to put our hands on kids or it’s not. It doesn’t matter the race, gender or ethnicity.

After the meeting, three other members of the seven-person board — Hannah, Charlotte Callahan Wozniak and Lucy Leguizamo — said they support a zero-tolerance policy. Leguizamo said certain de-escalation restraints approved by the Illinois State Board of Education should remain. She was not at the meeting, but watched the video by Wednesday morning.
