He was a leader in opening the door to girls teams; after 40 years, he's retiring

El Cajon Valley was on the precipice of losing boys water polo in 1983 when a young alum, Robin Sanchez, answered their call.

Sanchez, whose team did not win a league game the first year, could have just gone with the flow. Instead, he became a pioneer. And now, 40 years later, Sanchez has retired. “One year later, we made our first playoff appearance,” Sanchez said. “I remember we lost to Vista, 4-3, and I was walking on a cloud. In 1988, my former principal Art Pegas, moved to El Capitan and asked me and my assistant coach, Bob Shaeffer, to take over the boys and girls swim program, along with water polo.”“I certainly didn’t get into coaching to rattle any cages, but to simply give everyone the chance to play the sport I love,” he said.

His persistence eventually paid dividends. In1997 the section officially recognized girls water polo. From just a handful of teams, there are now 61 girls programs. “I have had some great coaches” said Sanchez, who admits he is just a part of the puzzle in San Diego’s Aquatics.
