Hays High volleyball team: Canyon High failed to remedy slurs
Hays High School volleyball players are accusing Canyon High School students of shouting racial slurs at them during a previous match.Hays High School volleyball players are speaking out after Canyon High School students allegedly heckled players withIn a group statement, Hays teammates said that “not enough was done to remedy the situation” after the Hays coaching staff brought the incident to the attention of the Canyon High School administrator on duty.
“It is unfortunate that our voices and concerns were not fully trusted, heard, and respected because adults did not hear the comments — only student-athletes heard,” the statement from the team reads. “If the students involved could not be identified at that moment, the entire student section should have been removed.”saying that the front row of the Canyon High student section yelled the N-word at her daughters and other teammates throughout the match.
“When my daughter missed her serve, they shouted ‘Make a play Nword-hard R!’ Our coaches told their Admin and all they told the boys was ‘watch your mouths,’” Gardner’s post reads. Hays CISD superintendent Eric Wright said that the Friday incident left Hawks volleyball players “distraught” but that he is proud of them for “their brave action in confronting hate and for their maturity in handling a situation.”
