The death of Peanut, an orphaned squirrel, has sparked backlash against a U.S. government agency online.

New York’s environmental conservation agency got complaints that Longo was keeping wildlife illegally.

The agency said in a statement it also had concerns that Peanut might carry a virus called rabies, which can be deadly to both animals and humans. According to Mark Longo, he and his wife were planning to help Fred the raccoon recover from his injuries before releasing the animal into the woods. He said the squirrel was orphaned after the animal’s mother was hit by a car.PHOTOS — Squirrels doing human thingsWant to see Peanut’s life on social media?
