In a first, researchers track the development of predator’s iconic snout
With their broad, flattened snout tipped at each end with giant google eyes, hammerhead sharks are both charismatic and easy to spot. Now, for the first time, scientists have captured step-by-step how this “hammer” forms in developing embryos.
Unlike most fish, hammerheads give birth to live young. Yet researchers have not been able learn much about the development of any of the 10 or so species. So in the new study, developmental biologists tagged along with scientists studying bonnethead sharks small hammerhead species with a relatively giant noggin. As the team scooped the sharks from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and off the U.S. east coast, the biologists retrieved live embryos of all ages. The biologists preserved the embryos for further study using different staining and imaging techniques, piecing together the video above from different specimens.
