“That might be the only time we see him tonight,” Dismukes as Eli says, acknowledging the limited on-screen time first-year featured players often get.“It could be worse,” guest star Jon Hamm chimes in.“Just a humiliating attempt at relevancy,” Dismukes cracks, ironically. The duo with Cleveland ties had one line in the sketch, but it was a thrilling one, even if they had to share it with 12 other people: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
With a reduced cast -- eight performers left the series during the offseason and Cecily Strong, who is doing a play in Los Angeles, is out of the mix for at least the first three episodes -- you’d think the new additions would get more opportunities to shine this season. But Longfellow was the only newbie to make an impression in his debut, delivering a funny and smart commentary during “Weekend Update” about not blaming “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney for the political beliefs of her parents.
