Every week, CBC Kids News takes a deep dive into a topic that’s been making headlines. This week we dug into the KN archives to highlight a topic that’s still in the news. Click the video above or below for this week’s KN Explains. In October 2018, Canada became the first country of the world’s major economies to make marijuana legal. For many, the conversation around marijuana has gone from hushed tones to out in the open.
We’ve learned a lot in five years about both positive and negative effects of legalization, especially around marijuana-related hospitalizations. To help tell the story, we dug out two videos from the CBC Kids News archive. The idea behind legalization was to improve public health, reduce crime and reduce youth access to marijuana, according to the Government of Canada.Note that one thing has changed since then: The legal age to buy cannabis in Quebec was originally 18. Marijuana use among Canadians has increased from 22 to 27 per cent since legalization in 2018. There have been more emergency room visits and hospitalizations due to marijuana-related disorders and marijuana intoxication.
