Samuel fumbled on the 49ers’ opening drive, but made amends with a bruising run to score San Francisco’s first points of the season.
Through the first four 49er drives on the soggy Soldier Field grass, Samuel’s been featured far more in the running game than through the air. Samuel has 4 of the 13 carries for San Francisco so far, picking up 11 yards. He has one of the three catches of Lance completions, for six yards.
On the opening 49er drive, the red and gold got into the redzone after a big pass from Lance to Brandon Aiyuk. Samuel got the ball in the bakckfield and rushed to the left but had the ball popped out by Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who recovered the fumble for the turnover. Samuel was visibly upset at the turnover, his seventh in his four-year NFL career. But the 49ers defense has been ruthless all first half, giving the San Francisco offense plenty of chances with good field position.
And Samuel was able to cash in the first score, as the 49ers lead 7-0 midway through the second quarter.
