“It flies off his foot,” safety John Johnson III said during OTAs. “He’s just got a big leg. Even when we did kickoff the other day, he’s kicking it out the end zone. Our kickoff team, they want to cover, so we might have to tell them to cut it down a little bit, but I just can’t wait to watch him. ... It could be a 30-yard kick, he’s going to hit it for 60. It flies through the uprights, accurate.
York is the highest-drafted NFL kicker since 2016. He left LSU as the school’s record-holder for longest field goal and holds another school record with 15 field goals of 50 yards or more. A three-year starter for the Tigers, York made 54-of-66 field goals and 164-of-168 extra points. The hope going into 2022 is that York will provide that much-needed stability for the Browns in a tough division, which features the Ravens’ Justin Tucker, the league’s all-time most accurate kicker, and the Bengals’ Evan McPherson, who made a splash as a rookie helping Cincinnati during its Super Bowl run. Cleveland hasn’t made it through two seasons with the same kicker since Phil Dawson’s exit ahead of the 2013 season.
Of course, York hasn’t yet gotten a true taste of the adverse conditions that can arise when it comes to kicking in Cleveland.
