The politician had discovered the unloaded firearm in his possession mid-flight between San Francisco and Hong Kong and reported it to customs authorities on landing. Under Hong Kong law, carrying a firearm without a license is punishable by up to 14 years in prison and a $12,800 fine, but offenders are typically sentenced to a maximum of 2 years.
“We are learning about the incident with at the same time as the press and public here in America. As I understand it, this was an honest mistake,” Braun said in a statement.
