Golden State Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga reacts after making a three-point basket against the Los Angeles Lakers in the fourth quarter of their NBA preseason game at Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif., on Saturday, Oct. 7 2023. The Golden State Warriors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 125-108. SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors are trying something new in training camp this year. If coaches see something they don’t like, they stop play immediately to assess where things went wrong.

“Kenny has been on me every time. Not just Kenny, the whole team,” Kuminga said after Saturday’s game. “They want me to rebound more, and I want to do it, for sure. It’s not something they’re forcing me to do. But it’s something I really want to do more. I spoke to certain coaches, if you don’t see me crash, after the game or report, just give me a number. I think every single day, we’re working toward that and I’m getting better at it.

“Maybe there was a little stubbornness early on, but that’s normal. He’s gotten here by playing this way, having the ball in his hands. Now you switch and have all these great players, how do I fit into a niche and role? He’s much more accepting of getting that.” Kuminga has to root himself into the rotation to avoid an uncertain offseason; a former first-round draft pick’s third year in the NBA is important because it’s the player’s last chance to earn a lucrative rookie-scale extension before the fourth and final year on their rookie contract. Jordan Poole, for example, parlayed a breakout 2022 title year into a four-year, $190 million contract last offseason. But the Warriors’ interest in Kuminga’s growth is mutual.

Trust was a word Kuminga threw around often as he was flopped in and out of the rotation last season. Consistency can be hard to earn within a veteran roster with the slimmest margins for error, and young players such as Kuminga may feel a hard pull on short leashes when they make mistakes. Perhaps the most important development will be for Kuminga to earn the coaching staff’s trust that when he makes a mistake, it won’t happen again.
