Avalanche Canada forecaster Simon Horton said the recent sudden swing in temperature has destabilized an already-weak snowpack in multiple areas along the Alberta-B.C. border. The warning extends from the southern boundaries of the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy and Kokanee and Valhalla provincial parks to Williston Lake north of Pine Pass and Mackenzie. Southern B.C. areas frequented by Albertans in the Kootenays are also at “considerable” risk of avalanches. Dangerous avalanche conditions enveloped a large area west of the provincial border as of Thursday, according to an, with a stretch of the East Kootenays listed at high risk. A handful of regions on Alberta’s side of the border are also noted as having a considerable risk, including the Banff and Lake Louise area, and the southwestern reaches of the province in the Crowsnest Pass area.
Avalanche Canada urges anybody who chooses to go into the backcountry amid heightened avalanche conditions to be prepared and trained for anything they may face, and to check the forecast before heading out.
