WOLFVILLE, N.S. — The only female Canadian citizen to be imprisoned by the Nazis during the Second World War has been recognized with a stamp., who was born in 1901 in Middleton and raised in Wolfville, is featured on Canada Post’s annual Remembrance Day stamp honouring her remarkable courage and perseverance. It was unveiled Nov. 6 at the post office in Wolfville.

They helped hide Allied airmen whose planes had been shot down over the Netherlands, their home serving as a stopping point in the resistance network. But in 1941, an informer betrayed the couple to the Nazis and they were arrested. Parsons was sentenced to death by firing squad. She appealed the ruling, and successfully got it commuted to life with hard labour.

Safely back in the Netherlands, Parsons sought help from an Allied soldier, who was also from Nova Scotia. He was part of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders unit that had advanced into the country. An eight foot by six foot stamp was unveiled as part of the Nov. 6 announcement. It will be a permanent installation on the side of the post office. A statue of Parson is located in the front of the post office. It was unveiled in 2017.
