Esther Wojcicki is the mother of two of the nation's richest self-made women and a Fulbright-winning professor. Her daughters are successful, she says, because they were challenged early and often.

. Her middle child Janet went the academic route, researching early life risk factors for obesity at the University of California, San Francisco.

"I didn't give them anything, even when they were little,"says Wojcicki, who was interviewed at the summit by Forbes Chief Content Officer Randall Lane."They had to earn it."Her child-rearing model is TRICK: trust, respect, independence, collaboration and kindness. She says that her daughters were never afraid to tell her anything, and they were empowered from an early age to make their own money and spend it however they thought they needed to.

The trio's upbringing stands in stark contrast to Esther's own. Her parents couldn't focus as much on her growth when they had a hard time affording food. She realized that her success could buoy her family's luck, and she went on to earn a graduate degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. And, when it came time to become a mother herself, she resolved to do things differently—which she notes can be tough.
