The race exemplifies the importance of primary elections in Arizona: After Aug. 2, nearly half of the 90 total seats in the House and Senate will be locked up, and by November, only 11 seats are likely to feature truly competitive races between Republicans and Democrats. "A lot of folks just want to see it move towards the middle," said Thompson, who runs an aviation business. Other observers declined to give their opinion.
With Republicans dominating the Legislature and likely to stay in control for at least the next two years, primary voters in some districts will define — among other things — how far to the Trumpian right the state will go. How many moderate or more extreme right-wing candidates, and who leads the body, depends significantly on who voters choose in the primary election.
If you haven’t filled out your party-specific ballot yet and voted in the primary, either by mail or in person, there’s still time. The last day to request a mail-in ballot is July 22. The Secretary of State's Office recommends mailing ballots no later than July 26. Voters can also drop off ballots or vote in person on the primary election day at 7 p.m.
