ContributedCountering the culture war with education and empathy | SaltWire #TransRights #HalifaxProtestNova Scotian towns and cities have been adorned with big beautiful elm trees often for more than 100 years.

The natural range of the American elm is from Nova Scotia to Alberta, and south to Texas and Florida. It is not unusual for some of the larger elm specimens to grow as tall as 30m and a diameter of 1.2 m. In fact, some of the dead elms that were utilized for the Truro Tree Sculpture project in the 1990s were in that size range.Elm trees were favoured for urban settings because it was hardy to such conditions, survived extreme cold, floods and drought and had an ideal growing form.

DED is caused by a fungus pathogen that is spread by tiny elm bark beetles that penetrates through the thick, tough elm bark and infect the living tissue of the elm which results in a blockage of needed water and nutrients to the tree crown. Sections of the tree then start to wilt, resulting in early leaf loss. The tree can be dead in two to three years.

Most communities that have seen DED eliminate most of their elms have only been able to clean up some time after the death of their trees. However, some communities, such as Truro, Halifax, Fredericton, and Charlottetown, have been more proactive over several decades in trying to prevent the further loss of healthy elms by identifying DED infected elms as early as possible, and then destroying the infected DED material.
