More than 500 people leaving care in Wales will be offered £1,600 a month for two years.
Basic income schemes have been piloted around the world to see whether they work better than existing systems of welfare.
Officials want to see if a basic income is be useful in helping young people leaving the care system, who often face challenges in finding a stable home and getting a job.. Welfare is not devolved and Welsh Labour government has devised the scheme without the support of the UK government, which controls most benefits in Wales.A basic income experiment in Finland saw 2,000 people paid €560 a month, instead of their unemployment benefit.
