Weather’s role in wildfires in Atlantic Canada | SaltWire #weather #climatechange #wildfireseasonNot yet, anyway. The Toronto girl, 16, was viciously stabbed at the TTC’s St. Patrick station on Nov. 7, 1975. Sixteen wounds in all.Lauren Robilliard, 25, would love to tackle Mariam’s murder. The B.C. native is the newest member of the Toronto Police Service’s vaunted cold case unit. A civilian employee, Robilliard is employed as a genealogist and fell into the field by accident.

“They put me to work on a John Doe, and three weeks later it was solved,” she said. “I went from helping adoptees to helping solve crimes.”For Robilliard, scouring old police files and newspapers is a pleasure. But in some more recent cases — partly because of changing demographics — fewer people have submitted their DNA to ancestry.com, 23andme and others.

Genealogists then look at the family’s branches. This is what happened in the long-unsolved Tice-Gilmour probe.“A lot of newcomers are more reluctant to submit their DNA so that makes tracking things down a little tougher,” Robilliard said, adding that Indigenous Canadians also submit their DNA far less frequently.

Western University criminology professor and well-known cold case expert Michael Arntfield has called these people the “missing missing.”
