NDP’s Wab Kinew was elected premier of Manitoba, becoming the first First Nations premier of a Canadian province.

Wab Kinew becomes premier after the New Democratic Party he leads won the provincial election on Oct. 3.“We can do amazing things when we stand together as one province.”

She served as Manitoba’s premier since 2021.“I hope that your win tonight inspires a future generation of Indigenous youth to get involved in our democratic process,” she said in her concession speech.

Kinew’s party platform included promises for health care, tackling homelessness and the high cost of living.Kinew was born in Kenora, Ontario, and lived on Onigaming First Nation before his family moved to Manitoba’s capital, Winnipeg, where he went to elementary school.Kinew leads a grand entrance at the second annual Orange Shirt Day Survivors Walk and Pow Wow on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Sept. 30, 2022.
