With hundreds of hours of interviews to draw from, Rick Waines had no end of material to work with for Zee Zee Theatre’s new AIDS memorial theatre piece In My Day.

“I initially didn’t have a plan, so I just read every word and any time something caught my attention as just a really great story or seemed important and I could put into a scene I would pull it,” Waines said. “For example, the cat story.”

“There are all kinds of ways that people approach verbatim text,” Waines said. “What I’ve done is, if someone is talking about a visit that they had to a doctor’s office, I’ve broken that up and assigned the roles to different actors. So we’re building dozens and dozens and dozens of mini-scenes. And occasionally, because some material is really striking on its own, we stick with the more direct approach.

Benz is one of 11 actors in the Zee Zee Theatre production, which is directed by Shawn Macdonald. Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg contributes choreography.“I had to figure out a way to go back to the late sixties and early seventies, when our story starts,” Waines said.
