If the grand inquisitor were a Martin Scorsese mob boss or a kleptocratic dictator, he might rephrase his pitch: Neighbors called Gotti “brilliantly public-relations minded.” Mobsters and autocrats know how to win hearts and minds. And it’s not just Venezuelans who fear. A strongman is appealing both to someone experiencing political violence and someone on a slippery slope to violence. That’s why we should be wary of modern American political discourse that finds its footing in fear.
