Naftali Bennett is no pushover. His predecessor, \u0027King Bibi,\u0027 is neither great at managing succession nor accepting defeat
While Israel has been in a near-constant election cycle for the past three years, this snappy pitch was meant to decisively separate “King Bibi” — one of his enduring nicknames — from the others.Bibi’s key nemeses: Gideon Sa’ar, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid. The Likud narrative, reinforced by Bibi and his loyalists, was that these challengers were all weak poseurs; inexperienced, unprincipled and ambitious beyond their ability.
For the first month or so of Bennett’s tenure, Bibi mocked him tirelessly, saying he wouldn’t last a week. Then, a month. For six weeks, Bibi’s family refused to vacate the prime minister’s official residence in Jerusalem, signalling clearly that he anticipated a fifth election in which he would triumph.
Bibi and his loyalists loved to belittle the new crew, saying that they were incapable of navigating the shark-infested waters in which Israel swims, globally. No one, they said, will take them seriously. Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomes Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to a meeting in Sochi on Oct. 22 2021.Interestingly, Putin mentioned to Bennett that each country has its “political challenges.” But, since all meaningful opposition in Russia has been neutralized, or imprisoned, he was really referring to Israel only.
