Virginia State University faces a federal lawsuit from two Christian student groups over a Campus Ministries Policy that allegedly suppresses them while exempting Muslim groups.

Virginia State University (VSU) is facing a federal lawsuit from two Christian student organizations that allege the school stripped them of their official campus status and placed them under the direct authority of a university-appointed minister. The lawsuit, filed by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) on behalf of Women of Victory and Bethel Campus Fellowship, challenges VSU's updated Campus Ministries Policy as a violation of the First Amendment.

Lawsuit Challenges Campus Ministries Policy

The policy requires all Christian student-led ministries to operate under the governance and influence of VSU Campus Minister Thomas Wynn and an advisory board composed of faculty and university personnel. It also bans student ministries from affiliating with their national parent organizations. The plaintiffs argue that the policy unconstitutionally penalizes Christian students for their religious beliefs while granting exemptions to non-Christian religious groups, including Muslim organizations.

ADF Senior Counsel Tyson Langhofer told Fox News Digital that the policy sends a clear message that the First Amendment means what it says: you cannot treat secular groups better than religious groups, and you cannot treat one religious group worse than another, regardless of motives. He added that the lawsuit aims to uphold the principle that the First Amendment means what it says.

Higher Education Accused of Failing Primary Role

Langhofer also criticized higher education broadly, saying it has broken from its long-standing desire to promote intellectual diversity and seek truth. Instead, he said, universities are telling students that any disagreement or certain speech is violence and that hearing differing opinions on important topics is discouraged rather than encouraged.

He stated that higher education is really failing in its primary role, which is to educate the next generation on how to deal with living in a pluralistic society with people who have different opinions. This case, he suggested, is a symptom of that broader failure.

Background on Virginia State University and the Legal Battle

Virginia State University is a public historically black university in Ettrick, Virginia. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, names the university and seeks to overturn the Campus Ministries Policy. The plaintiffs, Women of Victory and Bethel Campus Fellowship, are campus chapters that previously held official status but were stripped of it under the new policy.

According to the lawsuit, the policy forces Christian groups under university control while exempting non-Christian religious groups, creating an unequal playing field. The plaintiffs contend that this violates the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom and free association.

The case highlights a growing debate over religious liberty on college campuses. ADF, a conservative legal advocacy group, has been involved in similar cases across the country. The outcome of this lawsuit could set a precedent for how public universities regulate student religious organizations.

VSU has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit. The university's Campus Ministries Policy was updated recently, according to court documents, and the plaintiffs argue that it specifically targets Christian ministries. The advisory board, composed of faculty and university personnel, would have oversight over all Christian student-led ministries, a structure the plaintiffs say is unconstitutional.

The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief to prevent VSU from enforcing the policy and to restore the official status of the two Christian groups. It also seeks a declaration that the policy violates the First Amendment. The case is pending in federal court.
