Villanova basketball coach Jay Wright retires after 21 seasons and two national titles.
The 60-year-old Wright steps away after 21 seasons, 520 victories and a pair of national championships with the Wildcats. Kyle Neptune, a former Villanova assistant who spent last season as head coach at Fordham, has been named as Wright’s successor.
Wright joins North Carolina’s Roy Williams and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski as Hall-of-Fame coaches who have stepped down since the end of the 2020-21 season. The three combined for 10 national championships and 26 Final Four berths, with Wright and Krzyzewski both losing in national semifinals in New Orleans last month.
Wright went 122-85 in seven seasons at Hofstra, earning NCAA tournament berths in 2000 and 2001. He was then hired at Villanova, reaching the NIT in his first three seasons before making the NCAA tournament for the first time with the Wildcats in 2005. The 37-year-old Neptune was on Wright’s staff from 2008-2010 and again from 2013-21, with a three-year stint as an assistant at Niagara in between. His Fordham team went 16-16 in his lone season as head coach.
